GAME VIEWING, BIRDING One of the last true wilderness areas in the country, the Bangweulu (meaning 'where the water meets the sky') Game Management Area contains 17 rivers which flow into the Lake Banweulu Basin, forming magnificent flood plains and marshes. The area is designated as a game management area rather than a national park so that the local population can continue to support them selves by fishing. The wildlife of the region is rich and varied, with clawless ottor, black lechwe, situaga, tsessebe, reedbuck buffalo, elephant lion and leopard, as well as more than 400 bird species - including the shoebill. Unfortunately, poaching is rife. The area receives an average annual rainfall of 1 3000 mm. Summer days are warm, and nights are mild to cold throughout the year. Location: Eastern Zambia; north-east of Lusaka. Access: From Lusaka follow the road north-eastwards towards Mpika; about 60 km beyond the turnoff to Kasanka National Park turn left onto a secondary road to Chiundaponde and continue to Ngungwa; Livingstone Camp is a short distance further on. With the exception of the main tar road from Lusaka to Mpika, the roads are negotiable only by 4x4 vehicles and are impassable during the rainy season. Bangweulu can also be reached by driving through Lavushi Manda National park. Accommodation: Nsobe Safari Camp, near Ngungwa, has chalets for up to 10 persons; each chalet has its own bathroom (K400 per person per night, including all meals). Livingstone Camp has self-catering accommodation for special-interests safaris, and visitors there should first report to the warden of the neighbouring Kasanka National Park. Other facilities: Game-viewing drives; accompanied walks; canoeing; portered safaris; game-viewing and bird-watching hides. There are no food or fuel supplies in the area. Open: Nsobe Safari Camp - 5 May to 1 December; Livingstone Camp - by special arrangement throughout the year; movement in the area is limited during the rainy season.
